“We are on a fast track with the project schedule,” said Dave Ahern, the city’s capital improvement project administrator.

Parks officials agreed to explore installing more street parking options along Flower Street after business owners said they were concerned over the traffic impacts of the future events at the planned 2,800-square-foot community building.

The renovation would double the number of parking spaces to 16, but Rick Barnes, who manages several properties near the park, said more was needed to keep cars from clogging adjacent streets.

Additional parking could be created by finding room in the Flower Street widening project to convert parallel spots into diagonal slots, Councilman Dave Weaver said.

Beyond the parking provisions, the makeover plan found quick and decisive support from the City Council, which will still have to approve the construction contract.

Parks officials expect to complete the bidding process this summer and begin construction in the fall.

Rancho district residents could then see a completely revamped Griffith Manor Park by spring 2010, according to a city report.

“Let’s get going on it and get it built soon,” Councilman Frank Quintero said. “This neighborhood deserves it, that’s for sure.”
