It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s a grad

The article on Kelly Blatz (“Channeling his superpower,” March 18) was something everyone would be interested to read. It lets people know that the Toon Disney channel is changing to Disney XD and is more for boys ages 6 to 14 and also for girls who like action. It lets people also know how amazing it is that so many young teens from our local areas are becoming famous.

It seems like most of the local actors now are from Burbank High. Blake Lively was from Burbank High, and she is doing very well now. Kelly Blatz is from Burbank too, and it’s making the school itself look better also.

I enjoyed reading this article because I was a student from Burbank High and it just amazes me how so many students from Burbank are becoming famous. It’s nice to know that actors and actress who are becoming famous are from our areas like Burbank or Glendale.

A firsthand view of fire safety

My name is Laura Meredith, daughter of the recently retired Glendale Police Lt. Don Meredith. My dad very well might not be here today to share my day-to-day experiences if it were not for a properly staffed Glendale Fire Department who rescued him when he was trapped rescuing others.

I’m lucky — my dad protected the citizens of Glendale for almost 37 years, and I still have him. I don’t want some other son or daughter to lose their dad protecting the citizens of Glendale because Bruce Philpott thinks he understands fire department staffing (“Trimming fire staff will save city money,” Oct. 23). Public safety cannot ever be a budgetary consideration. Public safety is the first and primary responsibility of a city, and to speculate on maybe saving some money by flagrantly disregarding the experience of the on-scene professionals is just plain irresponsible.

Proposing to reduce the staffing of firefighters is not the action of a man who has the best interests of our city foremost in his mind. It sounds more like vindictiveness for an old grudge — but against whom? Who in the Glendale Fire Department offended Philpott?
