Glendale Community College Board candidates' Q&A

April 04, 2009

I bring the experience of a 28-year career in one of the most exciting, growing and changing industries: telecommunications. I have lived through periods of constant downsizing, followed by periods of enormous growth, and have been responsible for developing plans, implementing them and coming in on budget under both scenarios. I have held leadership positions in project management, engineering and government and public affairs.

This work experience was built on top of my academic preparation, which includes a Bachelor of Science in business administration (accounting and finance) from USC and an MBA from Cal Poly Pomona.

I bring the experience of serving on a variety of community boards where you learn to focus on the mission of the organization, apply your area of expertise and collaborate with very diverse people in order to serve the community and bring growth and progress.

I bring a solid relationship of respect and trust with our elected officials.

I also bring a proven track record of making well-informed decisions; of collaborating and including all college constituencies; of making decisions that are fiscally responsible; and of bringing growth and progress to our college.

My perspective is that of a businesswoman who knows and appreciates the importance of a well-prepared work force. It is the perspective of a member of the Glendale community who knows that the college is a valuable resource for helping to improve the people of our community and offer lifelong learning opportunities. It is the perspective of the parent of a college student who is fortunately enrolled in the Scholars Program at Glendale Community College. This is the newest perspective for me and one that is giving me a lot of practical insight into the challenges our students face. I appreciate the college even more, but I also see that there are areas that we need to improve in order to serve our students better. I hope to get reelected in order to accomplish this.

How can the college cut costs so as not to be forced into reducing its class offerings in the event of further budget cuts?
