Gala event raises funds for several area charities

April 18, 2009|By BRUCE CAMPBELL

The annual Gala Event, sponsored by the Glendale Noon Rotary Club to raise funds for its charitable work, was a success. All the money raised went into the Glendale Rotary Club’s Foundation. At the club meeting three weeks ago, the foundation began making significant donations of the money raised.

The lead gift of $2,300 was made to the Verdugo Hills Council of the Boy Scouts of America. The Verdugo Hills Council provides various programs and activities to more than 10,000 boys and girls in the Glendale, Burbank and Foothills areas.

Don Galleher, chairman of the foundation, gave a check to Jon Maeda, the Scout executive director. Maeda gave a short speech thanking the club. Maeda also gave an update on council activities and the help the donation would make to the council.

The Noon Rotary Club has entered into a joint project with the Glendale Sunrise Rotary Club and the Kofu Rotary Club of Japan for the purchase of language learning software, books and DVDs for students at the college.

It was also announced that the combined Rotary clubs are sponsoring the Japanese Fair from 11:30 a.m to 1:30 p.m. April 28 at Plaza Vaquero, 1500 N. Verdugo Road, Glendale, featuring Japanese music, drums and food. All are encouraged to attend this free event.
