Local nonprofit gets McDonald’s grant

Glendale Healthy Kids has been awarded a $10,000 grant from Ronald McDonald Charities of Southern California to fund hygiene supplies and educational materials.

The nonprofit’s Educational Project was established to address dental education, asthma awareness and preventive measures for diabetes and obesity among school children from preschool to first grade. Parents learn tips alongside their students as part of the program. The Ronald McDonald Charities of Southern California Community Grants Board, in announcing the funding, said the allotment was made based on its standing criteria to assist in health care, education, creative arts and social interests for children.

Baby-sitting classes offered for youth

The Verdugo Hills Hospital Beginnings Family Education Program offers baby-sitting classes designed for boys and girls between the ages of 11 and 15.

The baby-sitting class is an interactive course that provides instruction on infant/child CPR, basic first aid, home/auto safety, accident prevention, telephone skills, safety tips, when to call 911, poison control, fire/earthquake plans and other child care advice.

Upon completion of the course, participants will receive a baby-sitting certificate.

The classes are from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, May 30 and June 27 at the hospital, 1812 Verdugo Blvd., Glendale, in the Council Room on the fourth floor.

Fee is $35 per person. Reservations are required and can be made by calling Teri Rice at (818) 952-2272.

Church plans recycle collection

The First Baptist Church of La Crescenta is hosting a free collection event from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 16 at the church, 441 La Crescenta Ave., La Crescenta.

Items such as TVs, phones, tape players, photo copy machines, household batteries, computers, monitors, printers, cords and other computer hardware will be legally recycled by E-waste Center, Inc. www.ewastcenter.com.
