Water conservation plan will not work
The ill-advised proposal to force a 10% cutback on water usage is not only horribly unfair to already conserving citizens, but carries another disturbing and destructive consequence (“Water rule is rebuked,” Thursday). When trees are deprived of adequate water, they become stressed, which invites disease and insect infestation. They may not die immediately, but die they will, and it takes years and even decades for replacements to mature. Lawns and flowers can be fairly easily replaced, but the loss of large shrubs and trees can be devastating to a community and its ecosystem.
Another issue yet to be addressed is the wastefulness of our city agencies. Yes, we realize budget constraints limit the use of manpower and state-of-the art technology. But to expect ordinary citizens to cheerfully accept the city’s dictates while the city’s agencies visibly waste water (check out sprinklers in city parks, schools and other entities) is unrealistic and will only foster a cynical, resentful and scofflaw attitude in our people.
Viable, equitable solutions do exist. Our city “leaders” need to wake up and get real.

Thanks for the effort in campaign
As the final outstanding provisional votes were counted this past week, I was pleased by our success in receiving nearly 9,000 votes. While I did not secure a seat on the school board, we were certainly victorious in this campaign.
