NORTHEAST GLENDALE — First-year Holy Family softball Coach Greg Ziomek would like to see his team’s battery recharged.

The Gaels have tried their best under Ziomek, but he made it a point to explain to his squad that the pitching and catching needed to do a little better on the diamond.

“The heartbeat of a team is the pitcher and catcher,” said Ziomek after Holy Family suffered a 17-8 loss to San Gabriel Mission in a Horizon League contest Tuesday afternoon at the Glendale Sports Complex. “If that’s clicking, then the rest of the team will be sure to click.

“We are giving up too many walks and a lot of extra bases. Our pitching and catching was weak [Tuesday], we have to get the battery stronger.”

Holy Family (5-13, 1-6 in league) will not be going to the playoffs in a couple of weeks, but San Gabriel Mission (1-8, 7-0) will, plus it took another step toward wrapping up the league championship.

The Gaels tried to play the role of spoiler, jumping out to a 4-2 lead in the second. However, the Pioneers had too much experience and talent, sweeping the two-game season series against the Gaels.

“Their team hit the ball,” said Ziomek, whose team finished with 11 hits. “We are going to have to mature because we having been making some rookie mistakes.”

Holy Family tied the game at 1 in the bottom of the first inning on a lead-off, inside-the-park home run to left by Elena Lomeli. After San Gabriel Mission regained the lead at 2-1 in the second, the Gaels pushed across three runs in their half of the second.

Melisa Romero stole home on a double steal to knot the game at 2 before Holy Family took advantage of a pair of San Gabriel Mission errors to make it 4-2.

The lead wouldn’t last long, as San Gabriel Mission plated four runs in the third and six in the fourth to make it 12-4. Holy Family replied with three runs in the fourth to cut the lead to 12-7, as Ashlee Sandoval, Rachel Turner and Clarisa Romero came through with run-scoring singles.

“We did get back into it,” Ziomek said. “Hitting can be contagious when you get people on.”

Lomeli finished with two hits and two runs scored for Holy Family, which got two hits and three runs from Adriana Quintero. Aurora Aguirre had two hits for Holy Family, which finished with four hits in the fourth.

“We have the talent, but we are a little green,” said Ziomek, whose team dropped its fourth game in a row. “I’m looking forward to next year and the future.”

The Gaels will close out their season at 3:30 p.m. Thursday with a league game against visiting Bishop Conaty-Loretto.
