One-way ticket to politics

May 09, 2009

It’s been awhile since unabashed politics took center stage on the City Council dais, but it came back with a vengeance Tuesday with the appointment of Dave Weaver to the Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority.

Nevermind Councilman Ara Najarian’s on-point protest to the appointment, which centered on Weaver’s well-documented hot-headedness on the dais.

With Glendale Police Lt. Carl Povilaitis, a 10-year veteran on the airport authority who’s also a pilot with real airport operations experience, off the board, this city now has three very fierce politicians representing its interests at Bob Hope Airport — Weaver, Mayor Frank Quintero and former Mayor Rafi Manoukian.

Councilwoman Laura Friedman said that’s a good thing, but she must have forgotten about the years of built-up political acrimony between the three men.

And now they’ll be a packaged trio representing Glendale? We fail to see how effective that will be.

In fact, that has “political nightmare” scribbled all over it.
