Flags at half staff on city property

U.S. flags on all city property will be flown at half staff Friday in honor of National Peace Officers Memorial Day. Glendale’s annual Veterans Memorial Day Ceremony is scheduled to be near the entrance of City Hall at 9:30 a.m. May 25.

An earlier ceremony on the same day is scheduled for between 8 and 9 a.m. at the Vietnam War Memorial on Honolulu Avenue in the Montrose Shopping Park.

Diamond Award winners honored

The winners of the 2009 Diamond Awards will be honored at a reception from 6 to 8 tonight at the Embassy Suites Hotel, 800 N. Central Ave., Glendale.

Those being recognized are Craig Kupka, Lifetime Achievement; Samvel Hambardzumyan, artist; Stepping Stone Players, arts organization; and Ruth Anson Sowby, community partner — Individual.

The reception ceremony is free. The Diamond Awards were established by the city of Glendale to recognize those who have contributed to the cultural life of the community.

Society seeks help to identify buildings

The Glendale Historical Society is launching a new community project this month, in honor of National Historic Preservation Month, titled “City Jewels — Discovering Glendale’s Hidden Treasures.”

The project asks residents to submit a photograph of a favorite underappreciated building or physical feature and explain why they believe it worthy of historic preservation to be posted on the society’s website.

The project’s specific requirements and instructions on how to submit photographs can be found www.glendalehistorical.org.

Doctor gives talk on osteoporosis, aging

Glendale Memorial Hospital and the Commission on the Status of Women will present Dr. Manuel Momjian in a free talk on “Osteoporosis and You” at 1 p.m. June 9 in the hospital auditorium.
