The arguments that the people who want rent control have made are purely emotional. They have no substantive facts to back their claims.

They claim that because it was implemented in Santa Monica, it must be good (“Rent control works in other cities,” May 20).

Has that been factual? No. In the time that it has been in effect in Santa Monica, there has been a massive loss of rental housing, not to mention the loss of value of not only apartments, but of housing in the city — the last thing the residents of Glendale need.

What rent control will force owners to do is cut back the maintenance and upkeep of their property to the bare minimum, as has been seen in cities with rent control.

They claim that the rent in Glendale is outrageously expensive. Is the city of Glendale out-of-the-ordinary expensive when compared to its adjacent neighbor cities of Burbank and Pasadena? Absolutely not. As a matter of fact, on average, the rental rate is below that of Burbank and Pasadena.

Also, these cities are much less expensive when compared to the cities of west Los Angeles. The articles previously written never offered any concrete facts or figures to argue their point. Nothing more than emotional arguments.

Would I like my rent to be $100 per month? Of course. But is Glendale outrageously expensive when compared to the rest of Los Angeles? No.

Retirement money doesn’t add up

Regarding Herbert Molano’s Thursday commentary (“Taxpayers should emulate Shay’s rebellion, May 21), wow! If retired city of Glendale workers are getting $10,000 a month, I almost wish I had worked for the city instead of Los Angeles County.

I wonder where Molano obtained his information? It is so easy to bash civil service, especially now. I worked for 25 years for the county and retired at 42.9% of my last high year’s salary. I do get cost-of-living increases. I live with a friend, and between us, we are doing all right. We do not go on cruises, do not play golf, dewy mornings or not. Our idea of an expensive vacation was to motor to Pismo Beach.

I know many retired city, county, state and federal civil service employees, and none of them receives $10,000 a month, or anywhere close to it.

And none of us has gotten rich.

I am 83 years old and proud to have worked for the Los Angeles County clerk’s office as a Superior Court clerk.
