On The Town:

Fiesta night spiced up with rock ’n’ roll

May 27, 2009|By RUTH SOWBY

The joint was jumpin’ on Saturday night at the clubhouse and it wasn’t Fats Waller doing it, it was John CarroJohn Carro, playing a mean Elvis Presley.

The gals at the La Crescenta Woman’s Club sure know how to pick talent. And their “Viva Fiesta Night” was no exception. Who cares if their metaphors were mixed — Elvis songs in the midst of Mexican serapes, sombreros and sangria — the evening was a blast! At this rate, these gals will easily have the money raised to restore their clubhouse in time for their 100th anniversary in two years.

Credited for the choice in Carro is Carol Jones, outgoing program chairwoman. Kudos to event chairwoman Florence Virgallito for putting on a great party. Even husband Frank Virgallito got into the act. He, Joe Mendicina and Ellie Pipes — all having had recent hip replacement surgery, danced without their canes.

“My doctor’s going to have a fit!” Pipes said.

There were 75 more members and guests who dipped into the Build-Your-Own-Tostada bar for only $25 a couple ($15 for singles). They included President Rita Even, ready to lead the club for another year; husband Bill Even; and club publicity whiz Gloria Lee with her 94-year-old mom Sallee Long from Tujunga. Carol Benedetti won the opportunity prize basket, overflowing with beverage glasses, mixed nuts and a big tub of Keylime Margarita Freezer.

After line-dancing to a salsa beat, Crescenta Valley Town Councilwoman Danette Erickson danced cheek to cheek with hubby Kerry Erickson. Danette Erickson is due to take over as publicity chairwoman for Glendale’s Assistance League.

Club Second Vice-President Dea McCrory is planning a summer trip to Kentucky and Wisconsin, where she will visit other Woman’s Clubs in the system. She will come bearing gifts — the California State pin.

The joint continued to jump into the late hours.

The Healthcare Foundation at Glendale Adventist Medical Center unveiled a shiny, new memorial plaque on its Wall of Honor on Wednesday. Former mayor of Glendale Clarence E. Kimlin was memorialized by several dozen hospital officials, foundation board members and relatives gathered outside the main entrance to the hospital. Kimlin was also the former administrator of the Glendale Sanitarium and Hospital, now the Glendale Adventist Medical Center.

Former Glendale Mayor Larry Zarian offered his well-thought-out reflections on community leadership, lauding Kimlin in front of the appreciative crowd.
