Reckless drivers must be punished

One day last week I was passing through the Montrose business district where the speed is extremely limited due to the pedestrian crossings every so often, plus other obstructions such as gardeners, etc.

As I was creeping along, at an area where the street widens with parking spaces, a car passed me on the right at high speed.

At the next corner, where cars were stopped for the red light, the driver went into the left turn lane, around the cars, and continued on his way at a high speed.

I got the license number, but unfortunately, did not get the last letter or the kind of car. It happened so fast!

Drivers such as this should be caught and punished to the extent of the law. How can citizens assist in this?

Fool them twice, shame on whom?

How often have we heard the words “past performance is or is not an indicator of future success?”

Well, when I look back at the budget of 2008-09 our city manager, Jim Starbird, told the City Council that there was only going to be a $9.9-million deficit. After the council approved that budget on a 4-1 vote, only one councilman voted against the budget.

The councilman who voted against the previous budget was publicly ridiculed by his colleagues and by the Glendale News-Press.

About eight months later, Starbird revealed to the council in a public meeting that due to revenue short falls the General Fund was going to be short another $8.4 million. I guess Mr. Starbird and his highly competent staff made an error. Oops. Or did they know it and just manipulate the council?

While watching the budget study on GTV6, I feel like deja vu all over again, as Mr. Starbird is using the same playbook. He states to the council there will be a $6-million deficit for fiscal year 2009-10 and weeks later the budget deficit had grown to $9.7 million.

Gee, I remember a former councilman mentioning that in 2009-10 we could possibly be facing a $10- to $12-million deficit in the general fund.

I guess if the city had paid that councilman a quarter of a million dollars, the council and public would have believed him.

So, I have only one question to ask our present council: How many times are they going to be made fools of by our illustrious city manager and his highly paid staff?

I guess only time will tell who is right?
