However, this simple fact says nothing regarding the fairness and efficacy of either our tax rate structure, or of our system of deductions and loopholes, which mainly benefit the well-off and corporations.

Brandstater fails to mention that taxes paid by the rich and by many corporations are a drop in the bucket compared to their income. Speaking of laughable, they are laughing all the way to the bank.

We must look at both the tax rates and the amounts, compared to one’s income, actually paid after deductions and loopholes in order to decide whether we have fair and progressive taxation.

I believe that it is wrong to characterize Polychronis’ commentary as “ignorance,” especially given Brandstater’s own simplistic take on taxes.

Writers make for an interesting page

How fortunate we residents and taxpayers are to read interesting letters regarding our city and its ultimate future. Such educated writers as Dan Kimber, Herbert Molano, Mike Mohill, Patrick Azadian, Bob New, Robert Morrison and Greg Wilkinson — they investigate and report important facts of the City Council, Police and Fire departments, all for our welfare, safety and civil rights.

Without their dedicated service to us, we would be hampered with notices, multiple fees, restrictions and minimal city services.
