Glendale City Council Meeting Wrap-up

CELLULAR ANTENNAS

The City Council authorized staff to draft comments to the Federal Communications Commission regarding the development of a national broadband plan. Glendale Organized Against Cell Towers, a community action group that formed last year to protest a proposed T-Mobile “micro-cell site” in north Glendale, requested that the city advocate for changes in current laws that restrict the ability of local governments to affect the placement and design of cellular antennas.

Comments will be drafted and sent to the Federal Communications Commission.

RESERVOIR CONTRACT

The City Council on Tuesday authorized an additional $743,557 to the city’s existing contract with Metcalf & Eddy/AECOM for construction management services for the replacement of the Chevy Chase Reservoir. Construction delays and additional testing after the discovery of unexpected groundwater created the need for extra overtime and Saturday work hours.

The City Council also authorized an additional $91,960 to the city’s existing contract with Kennedy/Jenks consultants for design services related to the replacement of the reservoir. The additional funds are needed for more drawings and geotechnical services

WHAT IT MEANS

The additional funds will help the project stick to schedule. The reservoir is projected to be fully operational by August.

SATISFACTION SURVEY

Glendale Water & Power officials presented the City Council with results of their 2009 residential customer satisfaction survey, which was based on 100 telephone interviews with customers. The survey was done in conjunction with a statewide study by the California Municipal Utilities Assn.

Glendale Water & Power customers reported higher-than-average satisfaction levels than the statewide results.

SALARY ORDINANCE

The City Council approved an ordinance that establishes 10 new positions as a result of reorganizations and cost reductions within various city departments. The majority of the positions are currently vacant.

WHAT IT MEANS

The ordinance allows for pending reorganizations to take place.
