“Chief, find us something else,” Drayman said. “Shake the Etch-a-Sketch, and let’s start again.”

Meanwhile, Councilman Dave Weaver said he would like to see the vice and community police programs saved, but not at the expense of other departments, many of which have already seen 7.5% cuts.

“I believe the decision of the GPOA has unfortunately placed council members in a terribly difficult situation,” Weaver said. “No one wants to cut police staffing, but to pass increased deductions onto other departments will present just as serious concerns.”

Council members made clear the budget would be a work in progress, even after its adoption, so changes could be made even after the July 1 budget deadline.

The City Council scheduled another budget study session for Tuesday to hear from De Pompa and craft a budget for possible adoption later that evening.
