MAILBAG: Boxing match made a welcome return

July 09, 2009

It was exciting to witness the recent re-birth of the Glendale fight scene. However, at the first big event, the Glendale Glory, I am sorry to say that the fighters were totally mismatched! Let’s hope a more balanced card can be achieved next time around.

For example, the victory of Art Hovhannesyan, a talented fighter, over Daniel Gonzales was not exactly unanticipated. After all, Gonzales had a record of 9-22-4 with seven straight losses prior to his fight at the Glendale Glory. Also, in the recent sports notebook of July 4 the implication seems to be that Vito Gasparyan (another promising young local fighter) can be dismissed because he no longer trains at the Glendale Fighting Club (“Glendale fighters’ bouts moved back?” July 4).

I felt there was a subtle tone of indifference regarding information on this fighter.

Your reporter may be interested to know that Gasparyan has not given up on his career as a professional boxer and is presently training with Justin Fortune of Fortune Gym who previously has trained World Champions such as Israel Vasquez and Manny Pacquaio, to name a few.

In future columns, let’s be positive to all Glendale fighters who proudly represent the Jewel City, whether they happen to train in Glendale, Hollywood or Siberia.

Cruise Night will rock the city

The Cruise Night planned for July 18 should bring the house down. The city of Glendale should put the main stage back at Brand Boulevard and Wilson Avenue.

I have loved the ocean since I was a kid, and surf music has been a part of life forever, so when the Jan and Dean Show hits the stage, turn the music up and play it loud. Between Pat Boone, Sha Na Na and the Four Preps, let’s show the world that Glendale is having a block party.

I remember like it was yesterday, taking my girlfriend in high school to see “Grease.” My favorite song on the album was “There is a moon out tonight.” I don’t care if you are 4 or 60 years old, old music never dies, it just gets better.

I remember my mom saying, “Turn up the radio!” The Four Preps were signing “26 Miles.” I did not at the time, it was 3,400 miles to L.A., the music capital of the world. Let the good times roll, and bring your dancing shoes!

Small Wonders a great addition

My husband and I really enjoy Patrick Caneday’s column.

Though our children are grown, we can really relate to his stories.

This is a great addition to your newspaper!
