As the reader wrote, “I hope this letter helps the public understand that if the golf course is destroyed, then laughter, memories, experiences and dreams will die with it.”

Employment argument wrong
Michael Teahan needs a reality check (Community Commentary, “Could our gadflies please buzz off?” July 11). Our cities, countries, states and universities are taking big cuts in wages as well as unpaid leave. His assertion that other cities are quick to snap up Glendale employees is absurd. Unemployment is at 9.5% and rising. There are thousands of capable candidates who would love to have the salaries the city of Glendale is paying. The unions have gotten out of control in all aspects of our economy because they have big bucks to influence governors and legislatures. Companies like GM and their management have allowed the inflated benefits and pensions to bankrupt them.
I worked for the public sector for 34 years (Parole/Community Services), and when I retired I received 60% of my salary. The Glendale unions contribute a great deal of money to City Council candidates for good reason. The facts and research figures are available, Teahan, you just need to interpret them properly.
You are correct on one point: “We should be thankful for watchdogs who provide their services free of charge” before Glendale becomes another California in regard to budgetary insolvency and more taxes.
