MAILBAG: Petition aims to save golf course

July 14, 2009

I am writing this letter in response to one in the Mailbag (“Can’t afford to lose Verdugo golf course” July 13).

I do not play golf as this young reader does, but I do know how important it is to save the course, not only as part of our area’s history, but as a green belt and home to wildlife.

We are losing too many of our precious open spaces. This developer doesn’t care about any of this!

I find it mind-boggling that with the state of California being broke and our water being rationed that such a development would even be considered, not to mention the added traffic.

I am doing my part to help save this space by collecting signatures on the petition to save the golf course. I urge you to go to www.savethegolfcourse.org, download and print the petition and collect as many signatures as possible.

The public comments deadline was extended to Aug. 19.

The address to mail them to is on the website.

As the reader wrote, “I hope this letter helps the public understand that if the golf course is destroyed, then laughter, memories, experiences and dreams will die with it.”

Employment argument wrong

Michael Teahan needs a reality check (Community Commentary, “Could our gadflies please buzz off?” July 11). Our cities, countries, states and universities are taking big cuts in wages as well as unpaid leave. His assertion that other cities are quick to snap up Glendale employees is absurd. Unemployment is at 9.5% and rising. There are thousands of capable candidates who would love to have the salaries the city of Glendale is paying. The unions have gotten out of control in all aspects of our economy because they have big bucks to influence governors and legislatures. Companies like GM and their management have allowed the inflated benefits and pensions to bankrupt them.

I worked for the public sector for 34 years (Parole/Community Services), and when I retired I received 60% of my salary. The Glendale unions contribute a great deal of money to City Council candidates for good reason. The facts and research figures are available, Teahan, you just need to interpret them properly.

You are correct on one point: “We should be thankful for watchdogs who provide their services free of charge” before Glendale becomes another California in regard to budgetary insolvency and more taxes.
