Oldies but goodies

Classic cars meet ’50s tunes during ever-popular Cruise Night downtown.

July 19, 2009|By Melanie Hicken

Brand Boulevard went retro Saturday as automobiles from eras past filled the street for the city’s 16th annual Cruise Night.

More than 450 classic cars filled the boulevard, which was blocked off from traffic for several blocks. Thousands of contest entrants and attendees came from across Southern California for what many said has become an annual tradition for people across the region.

“We come every year,” said Patti Moore, who was sitting with her husband Tom by their white 1956 Ford Thunderbird, which her husband’s uncle bought after returning home from military service. “It’s such a fun show.”

People of all ages were in attendance, ranging from car fanatics to those simply looking for a fun summer evening.

“It’s free, and I love old cars,” said Mark Leskys, who was making his fourth trip to the classic car show. A 1970 Dodge Challenger especially caught his eye, as he has recently looked at a third-generation Challenger, which became available in 2008.

“It’s kind of cool to actually look at the original and compare,” he said.

Dave Fink had attended the event a number of times, but this year was the first time he entered one of his own classic cars — a cherry red 1965 Ford Mustang.

“I have always been fascinated by cars,” he said.

Erin Brand and her daughter Jennifer got into the retro spirit by donning matching pink poodle skirts while polishing Brand’s boyfriend’s 1956 Chevy Bel Air.

Nearby on the main stage at the corner of Brand and Milford Street, people danced to the Four Preps’ 1950s tunes. Also taking the stage throughout the night were surf-music band the Jan and Dean Show and headliner Sha Na Na.

The winning cars, which were ranked by celebrity guest judge Pat Boone, were announced later.

Susan Knibel and Diana Spears walked down Brand laughing and moving to the beat of the music while stopping to admire the cars.

“It’s good oldies music, and it goes with the vintage cars,” Knibel said.
