Glendale City Council Preview: Pedestrian Safety

August 03, 2009

The City Council on Tuesday will review the receipt of $150,000 in grant funding from the California Office of Traffic Safety to the Glendale Police Department for pedestrian education and speed enforcement activities.

The funding will be used to pay for overtime hours for Glendale police and community service officers, support staff and supervisors when conducting education or speed enforcement.

WHAT TO EXPECT

The council is expected to approve the grant funding.

YOUTH CAMP

The council will consider the appropriation of a $50,000 grant from the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy to fund a planning study to locate and design a youth-oriented, overnight campground in the Verdugo Mountains, San Gabriel Mountains or San Rafael Hills.

The grant was originally awarded in November, but then the funding was frozen by the state. It has recently been unfrozen.

WHAT TO EXPECT

The council will likely approve the grant appropriation as there is no fiscal effect to the city and it will go toward improving event programming for local youth.

CO-SPONSORING EVENTS

The council will consider requests from two local organizations for the city to co-sponsor events.

The Homenetmen Glendale Ararat chapter is seeking city co-sponsorship for its fourth annual “Glendale Friendship Games” Oct. 24 and 25 at the Glendale Sports Complex.

Path Achieve Glendale, the city’s largest homeless services provider, is seeking city co-sponsorship for its first Dinner and a Movie Under the Stars fundraiser at the Americana at Brand on Sept. 12.

WHAT TO EXPECT

The council will likely approve the sponsorships.
