In The Classroom:

Building up their own hearts

Counselors say YMCA summer camp gives children chance to bond and find role models.

It was Valentine’s Day at the Glendale YMCA on Monday.

Glitter, glue, construction paper, pipe cleaner ties and other materials covered a portion of the youth lobby floor at the YMCA, as children participated in another week of summer day camp.

This week’s theme is “Holidays Around the Year.” On Monday, the campers celebrated Valentine’s Day by decorating paper hearts.

Christmas will be celebrated today by watching a G- or PG-rated movie and taking a dip in the pool. On Thursday, the campers will celebrate Halloween by arriving at camp dressed in their favorite costumes and taking another dip in the pool. Friday, the kids will celebrate Cinco de Mayo by holding a cook-out at Fremont Park, where they will be playing water games in the afternoon and feasting on taco salad.

The annual camp begins when the Glendale Unified School District goes on summer break. It has been held for as long as the Glendale YMCA has been in existence, said camp supervisor Helena Danni. The camp features a variety of activities for youth, which range in age from 6 to 14. They go on field trips almost daily, swim, do arts and crafts, host guest speakers, cookouts, and play everything from kickball and handball to dodge ball and foosball.

The camp is from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday to Friday, allowing commuter parents to drop-off and pick-up their children, Danni said.

“I like to play most stuff like foosball and handball,” said camper Caden Mikkelson, 6, of Hollywood. “I don’t beat everybody I play against, but I beat some people.”

This week’s theme comes on the heels of other themes that the camp has had, such as “Wacky Week,” “Luau Week” and “Carnival Week.”

“I think it’s cool, because in summer there’s not a lot of summer holidays to celebrate,” said Miranda Kelley, 10, of Glendale. Camp staff will often bring in speakers to talk to the kids about educational topics, such as this week’s hygiene talk. But rarely do the kids see these educational talks as “school,” given that the talks take place at a summer camp, organizers said.
