“Now we know what every team looks like,” Rome said. “We have an idea of who we’re playing and the type of athletes they recruit. We just have to take it one game at a time, progress at that schedule, look past no one and do our best against each team as they present themselves down the schedule.”
Glendale college opens the season at 7 p.m. on Sat. Sept. 5 at Sartoris Field against West Los Angeles College, which handed the Vaqueros a 20-13 loss in last year’s opener.
From there, the Vaqueros head to East Los Angeles College for a 6 p.m. game on Sept. 12, before returning home for a 6 p.m. kickoff against Riverside City College on Sept. 19.
Glendale college began its best stretch of the 2008 campaign with a 75-21 demolition of East L.A. before shutting down the Tigers’ high-powered offense in a 20-7 win.
The nonconference portion of the Vaqueros’ schedule concludes with a game at Orange Coast College at 6 p.m. on Sept. 26, a contest that also begins a three-game stretch on the road. The Pirates defeated the Vaqueros, 31-24, in the teams’ last meeting.
“I think everybody has improved,” Rome said of the first four teams on the schedule. “I think West L.A. has improved their personnel. I certainly know that East L.A. has done a good job and I’m quite sure that Riverside, given its tradition, will do well, and the same with Orange Coast.
“I look for everybody to have made marked improvements in their programs and hopefully so have we.”
Conference plays begins Oct. 3 at 7 p.m. at Ventura College, a team which the Vaqueros defeated, 17-14, to open conference play last year.
