All-area Boys’ Tennis First Team

SINGLES

Vinni Lodolo, Senior,

St. Francis

He was the No. 1 singles player for a Golden Knights squad that placed third in the tough Mission League and made the postseason. Earning his third All-Area honor, Lodolo went 59-5 and was the team’s most consistant player, advancing to the semifinals of the league’s individual tournament.

Pete Sangsuriyakul, Senior, Burbank

Was a four-year singles standout for the Bulldogs. He placed fourth in the Pacific League Tournament and helped his team place third in league and qualify for the CIF Southern Section playoffs after missing the postseason the year before.

Alex Wood, Soph., Flintridge Prep

A mainstay in the top spot for the resurgent Rebels, Wood was an All-Prep League selection that was a steady point contributor. Went 34-8 on the year in singles play and 8-1 in doubles.

DOUBLES

Nick Daka, Senior,

and Mike Astorian, Senior, Glendale

The pair enjoyed another successful season together, as the two were the top doubles team for the Nitros. The 2008 Doubles Team of the Year had an impressive 52-5 record, with three of the losses coming against San Marino.

Jeff Asano, Soph., and Elliott Kim, Soph., Glendale

The two upset teammates Daka and Astorian in the league tournament and advanced to the championship match. The team went 45-12 and helped Glendale place second in the Pacific League and advance two rounds in the playoffs.

Kent Byun, Soph., and Eric Kazangian, Soph., Flintridge Prep

Accomplished singles players, the two teamed up to go 18-0 and earn the Prep League Doubles Team of the Year award. They advanced to the second round of the CIF Individual Tournament.

COACH OF THE YEAR

Ron Catano,

Flintridge Prep

First-year coach took a Rebels program that had not won a single Prep League match in the milennium and navigated them to a co-Prep League title, the team’s first since 1939. Team finished the year with an 11-5 record and two doubles teams entered in the CIF Individuals.
