He was, at 12, the only student whom I would be literally scared out of my tennis shoes of him hitting a softball back up the middle. I wouldn’t throw a good pitch to him.
I would pull him aside and ask him if he knew why I didn’t pitch to him — “you were scared of me!” I started to laugh. He was right, and I was amazed at the confidence level for a student that age!
Congratulations to his family and to Bill Hertz for advising him so well! Go Angels!

Lush green lawns on their way out
Regarding the Aug. 7 article “Not the typical turf war,” David Wood put a small amount of artificial grass in his front yard, thus the front-page article in the Glendale News-Press.
But Wood did a great deal more than that. He took a very small house in disrepair and replaced it with a beautiful new two-story house. Now, I do not know Wood, but I live in the area and I walk around the neighborhood three or four days a week, and I have watched the progress of this new house with interest. It is a great asset to the neighborhood, and when I saw the recent installation of the artificial grass I thought it was beautiful. I wish my front yard looked as nice.
Now, I am a gardener, and I have a great appreciation for living plants, but we live in the desert, and I fear the era of the lush green lawn is over. Wood’s artificial grass looks like the green at Augusta National. He should be congratulated for improving the area and for helping with water conservation.
I hope the City Council will reconsider its position on artificial grass.
