Locals swing through summer

Area baseball and softball squads go on to win district and regional championships.

San Gabriel Valley, which captured the World Series in 2004, 2006 and 2007, then proceeded to win the Southern Pacific Regional crown in Watsonville. San Gabriel Valley suffered a 2-0 loss to Modesto in the championship contest before regrouping to pick up a 9-1 win in the if-necessary game. Nate Rousey had a key single and scored a run to propel San Gabriel Valley, which earned a trip to the World Series in Moses Lake, Wash.

San Gabriel Valley began the World Series with a 10-2 pool-play win against Baxter, Tenn., as Crescenta Valley’s Elliott Surrey collected four hits. It then rallied for a 4-3 victory against Lake Minnetonka, Minn. Pitcher Danny Vargas struck out six and scattered four hits to earn the victory.

San Gabriel Valley then cruised to an easy 11-4 win against Long Island before falling to host Columbia Basin, Wash., 9-2, in a final pool-play contest. The loss forced San Gabriel Valley to take part in a quarterfinal game in which several Crescenta Valley players contributed in a 9-2 win against Cape Cod., Mass.

However, San Gabriel Valley’s season ended with a 3-2 semifinal loss to Hammond, Ind., in eight innings. San Gabriel Valley knotted the game at 2, but Hammond won the contest in the eighth.

DISTRICT 16 TRI-CITIES

The top-seeded Foothill Two Guys only had two hits, but it proved to be enough to pick up an 11-1 win against the sixth-seeded Crescenta Valley Mariners in the championship game of the Minor Softball Knock-Out Tournament. Samantha Fabian hit a two-run home run in the deciding game. Pitcher Jordan Lousararian struck out eight in the final game.

“After five months of hard work, it feels good to win it all,” Two Guys Coach Todd Fabian said.

In the Major Softball Tournament of Champions, the Crescenta Valley Red Hots reached the title game with a 14-4 win against the Tujunga Thunder before suffering a 5-0 loss in the title game to the top-seeded Burbank Legends.

Second-seeded Crescenta Valley Muir-Chase got some timely hitting and pitching to reach the Junior Softball Tournament of Champions. However, its bid to capture the championship fell by the wayside with an 8-4 loss to the top-seeded Burbank Diamonds.

In the baseball competition, the Crescenta Valley Black Belts staged a six-run comeback to post a 7-6 win against the Burbank Angels in the Knockout Tournament championship game. Jake De La Hoya had a game-winning triple to spur the Black Belts.
