Knights strike early, often

Football: St. Francis High opens season with convincing 40-0 road win against Arcadia.

ARCADIA — With a new quarterback on board, Dietrich Riley would like nothing more than to continue being a supreme wide receiver.

Riley proved that in more ways than one, let alone in half a night’s worth of work.

Riley finished with 220 yards of total offense and caught a pair of pair of touchdowns from quarterback Justin Posthuma to help ignite visiting St. Francis High to an easy 40-0 nonleague victory against Arcadia in a season-opening contest.

Riley, the two-time reigning All-Area Player of the Year, once again possessed sharp vertical and lateral movement in stretching and jumping to catch his two touchdowns. For good measure, he added a rushing touchdown before being pulled at halftime by Coach Jim Bonds.

“It felt good to go out there and make a statement,” said Riley, who rushed for 112 yards in 13 carries and caught five passes for 108 yards. “Justin and I have been staying after practice to work on routes, and it’s great for him to get his first varsity win.”

The Golden Knights, ranked sixth in the CIF Southern Section Western Division, scored on their first seven possessions to make short work of the Apaches (0-2). Posthuma, who had three touchdown passes and one rushing score, completed nine of 14 passes for 190 yards before also being taken out at the half.

St. Francis scored on its first possession, which covered seven plays and 75 yards. It ended when Riley caught a 15-yard pass in the corner of the end zone from Posthuma to make it 7-0 with 8:24 left.

On its next possession, tight end Travis Talianko hauled in a 46-yard touchdown pass from Posthuma to extend the lead to 14-0 with 3:42 remaining in the first half.

Riley scored on a four-yard run to make it 21-0 with 7:13 left in the second quarter. Posthuma then scored on a one-yard run to extend it to 27-0 with 3:48 remaining in the second quarter. Riley closed out his evening when he caught a 56-yard strike from Posthuma to make it 34-0 with 2:05 left. Ian Sternau converted on 48- and 30-yard field goals to cap the scoring.

Bonds, who led the Golden Knights to an appearance in the playoffs last season, said the Golden Knights were eager to get their season started.

“We got a little taste of playing in a scrimmage last week against Valencia,” Bonds said. “We felt good coming out of that, and we wanted to do it again [Friday].

“We got on [Arcadia] early, and our defense and offense applied pressure. Dietrich and Justin did very well, but our line also did an outstanding job protecting Justin and opening up holes for Dietrich.”
