Motorcycles OK, but not their noise

From the number of articles in the Los Angeles Times recently, it appears that public opinion is moving against cruiser motorcycles with noisy or no mufflers.

Ignoring why older men want to behave in such an antisocial fashion, and why law enforcement ignores the problem, Glendale is in a good position to do something about it. Every year, the Love Ride assembles 20,000 of these bikes, most of which have open pipes. Can I suggest that City Hall be pressured to require Glendale police to mount a task force to ticket these riders?

Many of the bikes have no mufflers at all and can be identified by visual inspection. The rest can be required to ride single file past sound meters. To deal with the number of tickets, perhaps the machines used by parking personnel could be modified for this use, rather than hand writing them.

Personally, I am not anti-motorcycle, I have four of them in my garage — all with mufflers — but I am fed up with the din.

We must fix city’s driving reputation

I agree with Manuel Hernandez (“City deserves driving reputation,” Sept. 17). There have been many traffic accidents that have resulted in serious injuries, even deaths.

I was born and raised in this city, and it seems as the years pass, it just gets worse. This is a beautiful city with a lot of class, and the driving reputation lowers the city’s class.

We should work together as community members to prevent future heartaches.

We could use stores with healthier food

A move to Montrose would certainly add more parking and square footage to the Trader Joe’s store (“Trader Joe’s seeks Montrose location,” Sept. 18), but I’d like to see a Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market in our community.

We already have a Trader Joe’s in La Cañada and La Crescenta, and why not bring in something new and healthy?

Other communities — Los Angeles, Pasadena, Monrovia — have benefited by adding Fresh & Easy stores to their residents shopping choices.

Montrose would benefit from TJ’s

Yes, I would very much like a Trader Joe’s in Montrose (“Trader Joe’s seeks Montrose location,” Sept. 18), they continue to offer consumers an alternative to the big chains, better prices on staples and more unusual selections of products.
