Pta News:

Fundraisers help finance programs

September 29, 2009|By EDNA KARINSKI

District PTAs are in the midst of membership drives, and whether you are a parent, school neighbor, community leader or even a student, membership goes a long way in supporting youth and education in your community. Contact your school to join for a minimal fee. PTAs are also conducting annual fundraising events, so offer your support in any way you can. Funds raised are used toward improvements in programs at schools.

Speaking of support, the fifth annual State of the Schools Breakfast is hot off the griddle at 7 a.m. Thursday in the Edison Pacific Community Center, 435 S. Pacific Ave., where you will hear the latest news about the Glendale Unified School District. The event is sponsored by the Glendale Educational Foundation. For information on tickets, call (818) 247-0466.

Kudos to Verdugo Woodlands Elementary for hitting a volunteer record in 2008-09 with more than 29,000 hours! Parent volunteers are always in demand. Call (818) 241-2433, visit www.vwpta.com, or contact your child’s teacher.

Bolts of red fabric have been ordered by the PTA Council for Red Ribbon week Oct. 19 through 23. The theme “Drug Free is the Key” will have students donning wristlets and decorating schools with red ribbons to acknowledge participation in activities highlighting the dangers of drugs. Many thanks to Joanna Vose, Glendale Council PTA first vice president, for making this possible.

PTA President Helena Williams reports on a successful Rachel’s Challenge program and combined PTA meeting at Glendale High School and Wilson. They will be continuing with Friends of Rachel on campus at Wilson throughout the year.

Back to School Night is Thursday, and parents may visit their child’s classroom and learn about teacher expectations for the academic year.

“We are continuing our Membership Drive with a current total of 574 members and climbing,” Williams said.

Preparations for Red Ribbon Week, Oct. 19 to 23, are underway, as is the final entry day for Reflections contest entries on Oct. 23.

“Our next Executive Board meeting is scheduled for Oct. 13, and we always welcome anyone who wants to join us,” Williams said.
