GLENDALE — The following are updates on area Major League Baseball players.

Freddy Sanchez (Glendale Community College, 1998) San Francisco Giants infielder: When Sanchez, a three-time All-Star and 2006 National League batting champion, was dealt to San Francisco from the Pittsburgh Pirates on July 29, things seemed upbeat. Instead, Sanchez suffered a pair of injuries, including a season-ending knee injury suffered last month. To make matters worse, the Giants (86-73) sputtered down the stretch in the closing weeks and were eliminated from postseason contention Wednesday.

Sanchez underwent left-knee surgery Wednesday, with Dr. Ken Akizuki of the Giants’ staff performing the procedure to fix meniscus damage. Sanchez reportedly is expected to be fully recovered before spring training and will begin a rehab stint in Arizona.

The Giants, who are in third place in the National League’s West Division behind the Los Angeles Dodgers and Colorado Rockies, haven’t said whether they’ll exercise his $8.1 million option in 2010. They have 10 days after the World Series to decide.

Sanchez, who suffered the injury Sept. 21 against the Arizona Diamondbacks, batted a combined .293 (134 for 457) with seven home runs and 41 runs batted in. In 111 games played, Sanchez finished with 29 doubles, three triple, five stolen bases and scored 56 runs.

Trevor Bell (Crescenta Valley High, 2005) Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim relief pitcher: The former All-Area Player of the Year selection has made two appearances since Sept. 25. His latest came Thursday afternoon during a home game against the Texas Rangers.

The right-hander came in relief of starting pitcher Rich Thompson with runners on second and third with two outs in the fifth inning. Bell got Chris Davis to line out to shortstop to end the threat.

Then Bell encountered trouble in the sixth. He gave up six runs (three earned) on six hits and struck out two. He pitched a scoreless seventh inning. Bell made 63 pitches, including 37 strikes, in 2 1/3 innings in Texas’ 11-3 victory.

Bell gave up two hits in a scoreless inning during the Angels’ 3-0 loss to the Oakland Athletics on Sept. 26.
