Prep swarmed by La Salle

Water polo: Flintridge Prep boys handed 12-6 Prep League defeat by Lancers.

LA CAÑADA FLINTRIDGE — Something didn’t seem right while Flintridge Prep boys’ water polo Coach Keean Ferguson watched his team perform Monday afternoon.

Unfortunately for Ferguson, it’s an act he’s seen unfold more than once throughout the first part of the season — lackluster efforts from some of his athletes.

Flintridge Prep appeared out of sync throughout a 12-6 Prep League loss to visiting La Salle.

“For the most part, we did what we wanted to defensively,” said Ferguson, whose team fell to 6-5 and 0-2 in league. “Some of the guys played lackadaisical, and we gave up too much space when [La Salle] had open shots.

“We’ve done this before, but it’s something that can be fixed.”

Now might be a good time to fix the problem for a Rebels squad that went 0-8 in league last season.

Flintridge Prep never could get on track against the Lancers (8-6, 1-1). La Salle led throughout the 28-minute contest, as the Lancers received a match-best four goals from driver Thomas Jensen. The Lancers owned a 7-3 halftime lead.

The Rebels competed without senior driver Garrett Wax, who missed the match because of illness. It wasn’t clear when Wax would return, though Ferguson didn’t rule out the possibility that Wax could return Wednesday for a league match against visiting Chadwick, which is ranked No. 4 in the latest CIF Southern Section Division VI poll.

“It’s a tough league and hopefully we can get Garrett back soon,” said Ferguson, who got two goals apiece from senior driver Jeff Tobias and senior hole/set Chris Chu. “It’s a growing process for us right now.

“Some days you think you have it and some days you don’t. The team looks great and they get on a roll. Then, it goes the other way.”

Tobias, who scored both of his goals in the second quarter, said the Rebels never established momentum.

“None of us ran the plays like we were supposed to,” Tobias said. “It’s a case of laziness.

“We went 0-8 last year in league and now we are 0-2. We see La Salle again, so maybe we’ll be better and be [healthy] at 100%.”

Chu scored a pair of man-advantage goals in the fourth quarter for Flintridge Prep. The Rebels also got one goal each from utility players Patrick Hickey and Brandon Wen.

Flintridge Prep goalkeeper Ryan Loui finished with five saves.
