On the boys’ side of things, however, Arcadia continued to power through league, even with some of its top runners reportedly absent due to a hectic schedule. The Apaches defeated second-place Burroughs, 23-32, though Indians sophomore Anthony Monroy continued to impress with a second-place finish.
“I just wanted to stay up there with the front pack,” said Monroy who led the race early before being overtaken by eventual winner Ammar Moussa (15 minutes 41 seconds) and settling for second (15:43) to lead the Burroughs charge. “I think we’re performing really well.”
Moultrie, after a subpar showing in the first league meet, clearly redeemed herself, taking second in 19:04.68, just in front of a third-place Pham (19:05.33).
“It reassures me that it’s less likely to happen again,” said Moultrie of Thursday’s run compared to her first league race in which she took 34th overall.
Arcadia’s Catrina McAlister was dominant in winning the race in 18:49.63, but early on found herself trailing five Falcons.
“I was a little surprised to see us up in front in a pack of five,” Evans said.
Added Moultrie: “I think we just get excited and it feels good to be in front.”
Eventually, McAlister distanced herself from the pack with Pham and Moultrie battling it out for second and Kakebeen (fourth, 19:23.22) not far behind.
“We needed Anneke to get up in front and her job was to pull Ali [Johnson] and Cali [King] up,” Evans said.
Johnson, a sophomore, took eighth in 19:59.72 and King, a freshman, took 10th in 20:14.13.
