Vaqs hit a low point

Football: GCC gives up season high in points allowed while being kept out of end zone.

NORTHEAST GLENDALE — The Glendale Community College football team’s defense finally had an off night on Saturday, surrendering a season-high in points allowed to Bakersfield College.

With the offense unable to score a touchdown, however, it was debatable how much that really mattered, as the Vaqueros failed to find the end zone for the first time this season en route to their worst loss of the year, 49-3, in a Northern Conference National Division game at Sartoris Field.

The Vaqueros (3-4, 0-3 in conference) entered the contest with the sixth-ranked defense in Southern California and were ranked No. 1 in pass defense, but couldn’t stop Bakersfield (7-1, 4-0) from making big plays through the air.

Renegades quarterback Logan Kilgore (10 of 14 passing for 294 yards) threw for touchdowns of 28, 80, 31, and 88 yards.

“I would have to see the film, I don’t know why things were so open for them,” Glendale Coach John Rome said. “We normally do such a good job of preparation. We didn’t seem to have quite the same spark, but I hate to put that on us. I know our defense has played consistently all year. I hope this is just one aberration.”

After a 65-yard punt return by Vincent Van Horn set up the Renegades’ first possession of the game at the Vaqueros’ 28-yard line, Kilgore connected with Will Randle for a wide-open touchdown on the first play from scrimmage with 2:50 elapsed in the first quarter.

It took Bakersfield just two plays to reach the end zone on its next drive, with Nathan Stevens beating a fallen defender for an 80-yard score from Kilgore at the 6:18 mark.

The offense’s struggles to score were more familiar, as the Vaqueros have now scored just 28 points over their current four-game losing streak.

It was the second time this season that Glendale has been held without an offensive touchdown. The first was in a 10-7 win over Riverside College on Sept. 19, in which linebacker Kalii Robinson’s fumble return was the difference maker.

But whereas the Vaqueros’ offense was stymied as a whole that night, it certainly wasn’t an inability to move the ball down the field that hampered Glendale on Saturday.

The Vaqueros outgained the Renegades in total offensive yards, 443-433, and got production from quarterback Steve Miller (20 of 37 passing for 300 yards), but turned the ball over four times and went 0 for five in red-zone opportunities.
