October 29, 2009

More than 1,000 women are expected to attend the Women’s Community educational Health Conference and Expo Friday at the Castaway restaurant in Burbank.

The theme for the all-day event is “Knowledge is Power” and will feature Juanita L. Watts, a physician at Kaiser Permanente’s Glendale office, as the keynote speaker.

Community organizations will provide information, resources, health screenings and flu shots, while supplies last. Organizers will also host 16 workshops on female-related health issues.

The workshops are free, but participants must register in advance at www.clwomenhealth.org.

Sen. Carol Liu is expected to attend the event, which is sponsored by a coalition of companies, hospitals and health institutes.

The event starts at 7 a.m. at 1250 E. Harvard Road.

  Meeting on mudflows planned

City officials have scheduled a second community meeting on plans to guard against potential mudflows for Monday at Clark Magnet High School.

Officials will display maps for areas at risk for potential mudflows for the rainy season and go over emergency evacuation plans for local schools. They will also update the public on recovery plans for neighborhoods and Deukmejian Wilderness Park, which like much of the foothills above La Crescenta and north Glendale was left barren by the Station fire.

Residents will also have the opportunity to sign up for volunteer programs.

The meeting is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. at the high school, 4747 New York Ave., La Crescenta.
