Three regular and three alternate spots are up for grabs for the seven candidates.

LA CRESCENTA — Registered voters in the unincorporated areas of La Crescenta and Montrose can cast a ballot Saturday in the Crescenta Valley Town Council election.

Three incumbent members and four challengers are vying for three regular spots, which have three-year terms and voting privileges, and three alternate spots, which have one-year terms. Alternates have voting rights only if a regular member is absent.

The election will take place from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at Rosemont Middle School. The deadline to request an absentee ballot has passed.

The council, which comprises nine regular members and three alternates, acts as a community liaison with Los Angeles County Supervisor Mike Antonovich, who represents the area.

At an October forum, town council candidates spoke of fighting teenage drug use, staying vigilant in the aftermath of the Station fire, and beautifying and drawing new business to Foothill Boulevard as top community concerns.

Incumbents President Steve Pierce, Corresponding Secretary Liz Arnold and alternate Joyce Lauterback — whose terms are up — are not running for reelection.

The newly elected council members will be sworn in at a meeting Dec. 17, Davis said.

The candidates are:

Wendy Alane Smith, challenger

Wendy Alane Smith said she wants to serve on the council to help preserve the community’s endearing qualities.

“I love La Crescenta,” she said. “I love how safe and quaint it is, and I want to help maintain that.”

She said she supports Foothill Boulevard beautification efforts as an important way to draw new business and sales tax revenue to the area.

She added that her years of fundraising for various community organizations, such as the Kiwanis Club of La Cañada, have provided valuable experience.

Robbyn Battles, incumbent

Robbyn Battles, who grew up in the Crescenta Valley and has served as an alternate on the council for the past year, dove in headfirst with her work as chairwoman of the council’s Youth and Seniors Committee, which has addressed children’s safety, among other issues.

She was instrumental in the establishment of a secondary drop zone for Monte Vista Elementary School at Two Strike Park, as well as other pedestrian safety enhancements.

“I work that drop zone every morning,” she said. “If anyone ever wants to talk to me, that’s where I am.”
