Briefly: League to host school finance forum

November 17, 2009

The League of Women Voters Glendale/Burbank will hold a public forum Wednesday on school financing.

The forum, which will be taped for replay on Charter Cable Channel 15 and GREG-tv, will feature Glendale Unified School District Supt. Michael Escalante; Chief Business and Financial Officer Eva Lueck; school board President Mary Boger; and Patty Scripter of the Glendale Council PTA.

The panel will discuss how Glendale Unified schools are financed, problems with the funding structure and what changes could be made to improve financing. The forum will be on the heels of a discussion tonight at the school board meeting in which district officials are expected to give the latest financial impacts of the ongoing state budget crisis.

Some school officials have raised the possibility of introducing a parcel tax — which recently won in Culver City and failed in Long Beach — as a way to supplement decreased education funding from the state.

The forum is from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday in the school board room of the district administration center, 220 N. Jackson St.

The public may attend to submit written questions to the panel, or send them in advance through the www.lwvglendale burbank.org website.

Bicyclist, pedestrian safety meeting tonight

The city of Glendale and the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition tonight will host the last of five community meetings aimed at gathering input for the Glendale Safe and Healthy Streets Plan.

The plan will be a set of bicyclist and pedestrian policy recommendations for the City Council to adopt.

The meeting will be from 6:30 to 8 tonight at the Central Library Auditorium, 222 E. Harvard St.

Officials will summarize the information gathered at the first four meetings, request confirmation of the information and ask follow-up questions from meeting attendees.
