Texas was in second place in the American League West at the time and still within reach of catching the Angels at the time and McCarthy was useful in first two starts back, both of which he won. But the right-hander’s win over the Cleveland Indians on Sept. 8 would be his last, as he went 0-2 in his last four starts down the stretch to finish the campaign 7-4 with a 4.62 ERA in 17 starts. Texas finished 85-75 for second place in its division.

McCarthy, who was limited to 22 games by injuries in his last two years with the Rangers after making 23 appearances in 2007, his first year with the team, is currently eligible for salary arbitration.

ESTRADA EARNS SECOND

CALL-UP IN TWO YEARS

Former Glendale Community College hurler Marco Estrada earned his second straight late season promotion to the Washington Nationals, rejoining the club on Sept. 8 after spending the balance of the season with the Triple-A Syracuse Chiefs.

This time, Estrada, who made his major league debut with Washington the previous August as a reliever, was penciled in as the No. 5 starter, but the role didn’t last long.

After giving up five runs on three hits in his starting debut, an 11-3 loss to the Florida Marlins on Sept. 12, Estrada went back to the bullpen, where he did not register a decision in five innings of work over three appearances.

Estrada finished the season 0-1 with a 6.14 ERA, as the Nationals wound up 59-103 for last place in the National League East.

CASTRO COMES BACK TO

WHERE IT ALL STARTED

Glendale resident Juan Castro rejoined the Dodgers as a utility infielder for the 2009 season, returning to the club that drafted him in 1995 and employed him for the following four seasons.

Castro hit .277 for Los Angeles with nine RBIs and 18 runs while mostly seeing time at shortstop. He was included on the roster for both of the Dodgers’ playoff series, although he did not get significant playing time in either. Castro filed for free agency on Nov. 9.
