LA CAÑADA FLINTRIDGE — Impressive as it was when Crescenta Valley High’s girls’ water polo team opened its season with a 20-goal victory, it was the Falcons’ 11-6 nonleague win against La Cañada on Thursday afternoon that clearly made an emphatic statement.
“Coach [Pete] Loporchio told us that this was an opportunity to prove ourselves,” said reigning All-CIF and All-Area Falcons goalie Sofie Munoz, who tallied seven saves to bolster a steady Falcons defensive effort throughout the match. “We looked at it as a way to gauge where we’re at.”
Crescenta Valley entered the match at La Cañada High ranked fourth in CIF Southern Section Division IV, while the Spartans are ranked second. Preseason rankings are based a great deal on the previous season’s placement in which the Spartans advanced to the semifinals and a young Falcons squad ended its year in the quarterfinals.
