Mailbag: Tell me more about this magic whiskey

January 17, 2010

I live in Tujunga and attend Glendale Community College. I take either the streets or the highway to and from campus. I’m astonished by the intense sense of urgency demonstrated among motorists.

Usually I park in the parking structure east of the campus, because it’s convenient and it feels safe.

I have since had a change of heart.

The parking structure is like something out of the movie “The Fast and the Furious.” It’s a speedway! I park in spaces that are less vulnerable to being in an accident, and I’m constantly looking back making sure to get out the way.

There seems to be minimal regard for the pedestrians and other vehicles that also enjoy the comfort of the parking structure. I’m not at all suggesting that the person responsible for the fatal hit-and-run could be a resident of Glendale. I’m merely arguing that there is some room for improvement — mainly on the shoulders of the motorists who have a problem respecting the speed limits both in and around Glendale.

Minx has a long rap sheet of transgressions

Running an illegal nightclub for two years, more than 100 emergency calls, 19 noise complaints, illegal parking, assaults, a riot, a stabbing (“Minx case could settle,” Jan. 14).

Shoot — I hope the injunction against the Minx Restaurant and Lounge owner doesn’t inconvenience the poor guy.

President hiding health-care issues

On Jan. 14, the Associated Press reported that President Obama had agreed to a tax waiver on the “Cadillac,” or high-cost, health-care benefits for union members.

This tax was going to be used to pay for health-care reform.

Union members are about 12% of the American labor force.

That means the majority of Americans will pay their fair share of the tax plus union members’ share.

The president’s negotiating meeting with union leaders was behind closed doors. Now we know why he failed to carry out his promise to televise health-care negotiating on C-SPAN.

Isn’t one-party rule grand?
