On The Town:

New officers shine despite rain

January 26, 2010|By Ruth Sowby

Members and guests of Glendale Community College’s Patrons Club would not let rain fall on their parade. On a rainy Thursday at Burbank’s Castaway Restaurant, some 60 college supporters gathered to install officers and enjoy a delicious lunch of chicken Marsala, roasted salmon or grilled tri-tip. The adventurous opted for a little of all three.

Club advisor and Dean of Student Affairs Paul Schlossman installed the 2010 officers. They are President Judy Gorham, First Vice President Carolyn Payne, Second Vice President Marianne Jennings, Co-Third Vice Presidents Betty Musacco and Geri Costello, Treasurer Shirley Wright, Corresponding Secretary Jan Craig and Recording Secretary Pat Beggs.

Gorham introduced Patrons No. 1 guest, college interim Supt./President Dawn Lindsay, and broke the news that Lindsay has just been selected as Woman of the Year by the Glendale Chamber of Commerce.

Gorham also presented Patrons Club Lifetime Membership to Supt./President Emeritus John Davitt.

“That means you don’t have to pay dues anymore,” Gorham said.

More college VIPs present included acting vice president of instruction Mary Mirch and scholarship manager Susan Borquez-Dougherty.

Patrons Club members present included a three-generation family of Gertrude Ness, due to have her 104th birthday in April, daughter Jo Ness and granddaughter from Valencia, Susan Kagel. Jo Ness was in a wheelchair, having recently broken her ankle.

“Our family doesn’t break bones,” Jo Ness said.

More Patrons Club members from Glendale included Flora Corsini, Margaret Hammond, Glady Kabateck, Lynda Burns, Donna Dieny, Nadia Myers, Karen Wharton, Lois Edwards, Angela Vukos and Ann Arrabio.

The Patrons Club is beginning its 63rd year of raising scholarship dollars for deserving Glendale Community College students, primarily through its annual scholarship fashion show and luncheon held in November.

Community volunteer Lynda Burns had the tables turned on her when she was feted with a birthday brunch at the Hilton Glendale on Sunday. Daughter Amanda Beck from West Hills did the planning. Daughter Melissa Dant from San Diego provided welcome support.
