Local club has seven move on

Soccer: CV Soccer Club sends bevy of players, three from CV High, to college level.

GLENDALE — Olivia Sierra has been playing for the Crescenta Valley Soccer Club for as long as she can remember.

Thus, when Sierra was one of seven CVSC players — three of them, including Sierra, Crescenta Valley High players — that were the club’s centerpiece on National Signing Day during a gathering on Wednesday night at Damon’s Steak House, she couldn’t help but express gratitude.

“I’ve been on it since I was really little,” said Sierra, who will be playing her college soccer at New Mexico State. “They’ve taught me everything.”

Sierra was joined by Frances Boukidis (Northern Illinois), Amanda Rose-Johnson (New Mexico Highland), Michelle Weir (St. Mary’s College), Kelly Clark (Xavier University), Michelle Gonzalez (University of Pacific) and Daisy Hernandez (New Mexico State), as roughly 65 club supporters gathered at the Glendale restaurant.

“I’m extremely excited for them,” said CVSC Director of Coaching Reggie Rivas, also the CV High soccer coach. “For the club, it just shows that our club is committed to the players, committed to the training and committed to them going to the next level.”

Boukidis, who had committed to play at Northern Illinois before her senior season started, and the rest faxed their letters of intent from Damon’s. A forward at CV High, Boukidis was not expecting all the pomp and circumstance, but was certainly pleased that it came about.

“I didn’t expect it,” she said, “but Reggie always does something over the top, so it’s great.”

Weir, a Glendale resident attending Village Christian, shared similar sentiments about the occasion.

“To have this many girls going off to college is pretty cool,” she said. “All these girls are phenomenal, it’s nice to be recognized.”

Added Sierra: “It makes me really look forward to [college]. It makes it feel like a really big deal, which it is.”
