Coin flips go against Glendale

If the members of the Glendale High girls’ water polo team are to appear in the postseason, then they are going to need help from their crosstown rival to assure the Nitros a spot in the CIF Southern Section Division IV playoffs.

A coin flip was held Thursday at Crescenta Valley High to determine the seeding for the Pacific League Tournament, which will begin Tuesday at Burbank High. Crescenta Valley and Pasadena are Nos. 1 and 2, respectively.

Burbank and Glendale, ranked No. 10 in the latest division poll, finished league competition at 3-3. Burroughs is 2-3 in league and will play host Hoover in a makeup match at 3:30 p.m. today.

If Burroughs defeats Hoover (0-5 in league), it will be the fourth-seeded team in league and will earn the final playoff spot. If Hoover beats Burroughs, then Glendale will get the final playoff berth.

According to league rules, league officials flip three coins and the odd coin goes as the highest seed. Burbank was the odd coin and became the third-place team in the tournament. The next factor is head-to-head competition. Burroughs defeated Glendale to get the fourth seed and send Glendale to fifth.

Glendale first-year Coach Forest Holbrook said the Nitros will petition for an at-large playoff berth.
