Editorial:

Fees show how bad it is

February 13, 2010

A plan to charge Glendale Unified students who want to take summer school classes up to $350 is a sad commentary on the state of education funding, and the methods district officials feel they must employ to address the problem.

Students who need to take the summer classes to graduate would be spared the fees, but that teens who want to get ahead in the public school system would have to pay to do so is a reflection of just how bad things are getting in a district once insulated from the financial woes of its neighbors.

The summer school proposal is just the latest indication that those robust budget walls are wearing thin, and that the impacts are about more than just some nebulous debate over pay and benefits between teacher unions and district administrators. These budget issues will have a very real impact on our students for years to come.

When those impacts become too much for this community to bear, the time for a public discussion on other funding options will be upon us. In that discourse, let’s hope that what’s best for our students remains at the forefront.
