Glendale Council PTA gala to honor 100th

Glendale Council PTA will celebrate its 100th anniversary Feb. 25 at Brookside Country Club. The theme is “A Century of Commitment to Children, Dedication through the Decades.”

It will be a wonderful evening to honor the founders of PTA, as well as past and present volunteers. For more information about Glendale Council PTA, visit www. glendalepta.org.

Kindergarten registration for the 2010-11 school year begins March 9. Each school has its own requirements, so if you have an incoming kindergarten student, contact the office to receive guidelines for enrollment.

MONTE VISTA ELEMENTARY

The PTA will present the Caldecott and Newberry Reading Award Assembly on March 1 for students who completed projects and turned them in to the library. The assemblies will be part of a weeklong celebration of “Read Across America” from March 1 to 5.

The PTA meeting starts at 7 p.m. March 4 in the cafetorium and will be followed by a family night.

VALLEY VIEW ELEMENTARY

PTA is sponsoring an assembly by author George McClements on Feb. 24 in the auditorium. He will share his love of reading, writing and illustrating with students.

The annual Book Fair will be March 1 to 5 in Room 512. The theme is “Reading Makes a Difference.” Each class can shop for 45 minutes during the school day. They can also shop each day after school with family members.

MOUNTAIN AVENUE ELEMENTARY

Beatle Mania heads down “Mountain Avenue Road” for PTA Founders Day on March 4, with dinner at 5 p.m. and the ever popular show at 6:30. The “Yellow Submarine” will transport the Mamas and the Papas as they “Come Together” to reflect on “Yesterday” with a little “Help!” from the Swingin’ Teachers and Talented Students as they sing their own rendition of the Beatles’ favorites.

Travel to Mountain Avenue’s Passport to Reading Book Fair in the auditorium from March 8 to 11 where the adventurous world of books awaits you with Mrs. Nelson’s Book Company. Family Night will be from 6 to 8 p.m. March 10 with story times, snacks and special readings and book signing by Michael Wright, author of “Jake Stays Awake” and “Jake Goes to School.”

LINCOLN ELEMENTARY

Thanks to all the families and community members for donating to the annual Lincoln Penny drive. The estimated amount collected was $1,500, with $500 given to Haitian earthquake relief and the remaining funds donated to Lincoln for the purchase of playground equipment.
