Mailbag: Clean up crews give peace of mind

February 17, 2010

In Tuesday’s paper, there was an article about the number of dump trucks traveling up and down our local streets (“Down on the dumps,” Feb. 16).

I made my choice to live where I do for the quiet streets, wonderful views and the safe neighborhood. I absolutely agree that the traffic, noise and exhaust from the dump trucks are getting on my nerves. However, I am thankful for the clean-up crews who are working around the clock to prevent any more events like last week’s.

Yes, the dump trucks are loud and run all night long, but my yard was destroyed by the recent mud flow and I am thankful that they are out there cleaning up the mess. I think a few sleepless nights are worth a little bit of peace and the safety of knowing everything has been done to protect my life and my property in case of another disaster like last week.

The clean-up crews are heroes in my book.

Thanks from the bottom of my heart

As a long-standing member of our community, I would like to acknowledge and thank one of our city’s most valuable assets — the Cardiac Fitness Center at Glendale Memorial Hospital.

In 1980, the Cardiac Fitness Center was started by a group of cardiologists as a modest exercise program for their patients. This year marks the program’s 30th anniversary of providing exceptional cardiac rehabilitation services to those who’ve experienced heart disease.

Today, Glendale Memorial’s Cardiac Fitness Center has grown to become the area’s leading facility to help patients regain a normal lifestyle, utilizing techniques of progressive exercise and lifestyle modification. In fact, when other hospitals are closing or restructuring their cardiac rehabilitation programs, Glendale Memorial’s Cardiac Fitness Center remains the area’s only dedicated program, complementing the heart center’s comprehensive cardiac services.

Last year, I decided to join the Cardiac Fitness Center’s Health Fit program so I could exercise to improve my overall health and help relieve the stress and tension of a long workday.

Although I am not a cardiac patient, the staff at the Cardiac Fitness Center remains helpful and supportive. They answer any questions I may have and teach me how to stay healthy.
