But being a marriage and family therapist, Bradford Bancroft didn’t want to call so much public attention to his quest to lose weight, so he came up with a compromise. He promised his wife he would start working out three times a week if she could come up with an alternative to the TV show experience.
“In three minutes, my industrious wife came up with All About You! Wellness BootCamp,” he said.
Through that program they learned about the Lose a Ton in ’10 weight-loss challenge, a partnership between the boot camp, Glendale Adventist Medical Center and Glendale Healthy Kids, a nonprofit organization that helps low-income, underinsured children gain access to health care.
Glendale Adventist is the main sponsor, and medical center officials have pledged $1 for every pound participants lose up to $2,000, which will be donated to Glendale Healthy Kids, said Elaine Miller, the boot camp co-owner and fitness trainer.
“Our goal is to lose 2,000 pounds,” she said.
Those registered in the program enter the pounds they’ve lost on the website, which is maintained by Glendale Adventist.
“So far, our 66 participants have lost 180 pounds,” Miller said. “It’s great that so many people are showing an interest in getting healthy and fit and also giving back to the community for a good cause.”
Some of the participants are pledging a $1 or $5 for every pound they lose, which will also go to Glendale Healthy Kids, she said.
Participants receive tips and guidance to help them reach nutritional and exercise goals. The program includes monthly weigh-ins with prizes and help with weight tracking and monitoring progress and an educational seminar. The next event is Sunday at the Americana at Brand.
