Scholarship deadline is March 5

The application deadline for most scholarships offered through the Community Foundation of the Verdugos is March 5. More information is available at www.community foundationofthe verdugos.org or by calling the foundation office at (818) 241-8040.

Applications from students qualifying for the Burrows Memorial Scholarship Awards are due March 15.

Assessments offered at fair

A Wellness Health Fair, themed “Building a Healthier Community,” is planned from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at La Cañada Presbyterian Church, 626 Foothill Blvd., La Cañada Flintridge.

Screenings available include blood pressure, body fat testing, osteoporosis screening, balance studies, hearing and skin tests.

Also participating are the American Red Cross and Southern California regional blood services.

There will be tours of the newly constructed church facilities along with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Guests include Los Angeles County Supervisor Mike Antonovich, Tournament of Roses Parade co-host Stephanie Edwards and Assemblyman Anthony Portantino.

Classes for families of mentally ill

The National Alliance for the Mentally Ill, Glendale chapter will sponsor free education programs starting March 4 for families of people diagnosed with serious mental illness.

The 12-week series of Thursday classes will be from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at Verdugo Mental Health Care, 1540 E. Colorado St., Glendale.

The course will cover schizophrenia; mood disorders like bipolar disorder and major depression; panic disorder and obsessive compulsive disorder; coping skills; medication; recovery and rehabilitation.
