Miss America flips flapjacks

February 23, 2010

Miss America Caressa Cameron showed off her pancake-flipping skills Monday at the International House of Pancakes headquarters on Brand Boulevard. The showcase was set up to kick off National Pancake Day today.

Cameron, 23, of Virginia, learned earlier Monday how to properly flip pancakes, which she said requires just the right amount of wrist movement.

“It’s the wrist and quick flip,” Cameron said. “You can’t take your time. You’ve got to do it real quick and get some air under it.”

Getting the chance to learn how to flip pancakes at the renowned pancake house is one of the perks of being Miss America, she said.

“You absolutely get to learn some amazing new things,” Cameron said.

“You get to meet fantastic people and travel places that you otherwise would probably not have the opportunity to do so in such a tremendous scale at one time.”

IHOP is serving free stacks of pancakes from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. today at all of its restaurants in exchange for considering a donation to the nonprofit Children’s Miracle Network, which is dedicated to providing medical supplies and treatment to children with life-threatening illnesses.
