GLENDALE — For the first match of the season, St. Francis golf Coach Jeff Durfee couldn’t have asked for a better result.

Durfee found his athletes in the right frame of mind with the ability to shoot low scores on a chilly Thursday afternoon during a nonleague tri-match at La Cañada Country Club.

St. Francis received an even-par 34 from junior Sean Brennan to help the Golden Knights shoot a 175 and best neighbors La Cañada and Flintridge Prep. La Cañada carded a 193 and Flintridge Prep finished with a 204.

“I’m happy to see them play that well for a first match,” said Durfee, whose team took fourth in the Mission League last season before taking seventh in the CIF Southern Section Western Team Divisional. “Everybody played well, and I thought we would be pretty good coming into the season.”

The Golden Knights received a 36 from Bobby Coffin and a 37 from Richie Maloof. They also got a 38 from Drake Muir and a 40 from Vincent Korth.

Durfee said Brennan played baseball the previous two seasons for the Golden Knights, but opted to try out for the golf team.

“For a first match for him, he gets an even par by playing very consistent,” Durfee said. “He made a bunch of pars.

“It’s a great place for him and the team to start. If we can continue to play like we did [Thursday], I think we will be in good shape.”

Senior Anton Arboleda of La Cañada, which captured its fifth straight Rio Hondo League championship last season, carded a 32 to secure medalist honors.

Flintridge Prep, which took fourth in the Prep League last season, began the process of revamping its program. The Rebels have brought in a slew of freshman to help improve the squad.

The Rebels received 39s from freshmen Jack Bouchard and Tim Jones. Justin Farshidi had a 40 for Flintridge Prep, which got 43s from Ryan Kim and Josh Kim.

“When you have young players, you have no idea how they will react in their first match,” Flintridge Prep Coach Bob Loughrie said. “I’m thrilled with the way we played against two very good teams.

“I told them that was the best score we have had in three years.”
