College Update:

Kauppila off to strong start

Former Falcon batting .500; Karasawa faring well for Hawaii Pacific squad.

GLENDALE — The following are updates on area athletes at the collegiate level.

Kris Kauppila (Crescenta Valley High, 2008) sophomore shortstop, University of Portland baseball: Kauppila, a former All-Area Baseball Player of the Year, has gotten off to a good start for the Pilots (6-1).

Entering Friday’s nonconference road contest against Arkansas State, Kauppila was hitting .500 (14 for 28) with three doubles and three runs batted in. In seven games played, Kauppila has recorded six putouts and 22 assists.

He has hit safely in six games, recording at least two hits in a contest five times. On Tuesday, Kauppila recorded a pair of hits to spark Portland to an 8-0 nonconference home victory against George Fox University. Kauppila, who has a .688 on-base percentage, contributed three hits in Portland’s 5-4 loss to visiting Seattle University on Sunday.

Mackenna Karasawa (Glendale Community College, 2008) senior guard, Hawaii Pacific University basketball senior: The former All-Western State Conference selection had seven points and four assists to help the Sea Warriors record a 67-64 overtime victory against Grand Canyon College in a Pac West contest Thursday in Phoenix. The win gave the Sea Warriors at least a share of the conference championship and earned them a trip to the NCAA West Region Tournament for the first time in the program’s history.

Hawaii Pacific (17-6 and 13-1 in conference) can capture the conference crown outright with a victory against Dixie State today.

Ashleigh Viers-Gordillo (Crescenta Valley High, 2008) sophomore freshman infielder/outfielder, Boise State University softball: The former All-Area Softball Player of the Year hit her first home run on the season Feb. 19 in Boise State’s 7-6 loss to Long Beach State in the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic in Las Vegas.

Viers-Gordillo homered to begin the sixth inning to knot the game at 6. She finished with a pair of hits in the contest.

She is batting .333 (three for nine) in four games for the Broncos (2-7).

Jack Avetissian (Glendale resident) junior forward, Cal State Northridge men’s hockey: Avetissian has recorded 17 goals and 40 assists for 57 points with the Matadors (17-2). He’s notched four power-play goal and one short-handed goal in 19 games played.
