NORTHEAST GLENDALE — As Los Angeles Center for Enriched Studies girls’ soccer Coach David London walked off the field Monday afternoon at the Glendale Sports Complex, he replied, “If that’s the No. 4 seed, I’d hate to see the No. 1.”

While many were puzzled by the seeding as it related to the CIF Southern California Division III Regional Soccer Championships, whether Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy was the top seed or not, it certainly played as such against LACES, dismantling the City Section Small Schools champion, 7-0.

“Give credit to the other team, they came out and they played hard,” said Sacred Heart co-Coach Frank Pace, whose Tologs will host Desert Christian, a 1-1 (5-4) winner against top-seeded Garces, on Wednesday, at the complex. “With all due respect to them, though, we play at a different level.”

That statement proved true early and often, as Sacred Heart (20-1-4) shot out to a 2-0 lead in the first seven minutes and was up by the final score after Alyssa Conti scored off a Krista Meaglia assist in the 30th minute.

Thereafter, Pace and co-Coach Kathy Desmond told their players to put on the brakes, with the final 10 minutes of the first half playing out with Sacred Heart effectively playing keep-away from the Unicorns (8-7-2). The second half was much the same in terms of the Tologs’ approach, but the Unicorns were able to get off eight shots, as Sacred Heart played with largely reserves and with just 10 players.

“It was pretty quick,” said Sacred Heart’s Katie Johnson of when the Tologs realized it would be a big day offensively. “Once you make your shots and finish, it’s a lot more relaxing.”

And the Tologs were relaxed throughout, effortlessly executing their offensive attack.

Johnson had two goals and a pair of assists, her first score coming in the fourth minute, as Tera Trujillo played a ball up to Breeana Koemans, who crossed a shot into the middle of the box where Johnson easily headed in a 1-0 lead.

Jillian Jacobs scored four minutes later when a Natalie Zeenni corner kick found its way to Johnson, who passed it to Jacobs on the left side, who went high on a shot from just outside the box for a 2-0 lead.
