GCC alum gets honor

Monroe earns All-Frontier League second-team accolades.

GLENDALE — The following are updates on area athletes at the collegiate level.

Markus Monroe (Glendale Community College, 2009) junior guard, Lewis-Clark State College men’s basketball: Monroe, a two-time All-Western State Conference selection with Glendale college, proved he could perform at the four-year level. Monroe, who earned all-state honors last season after averaging 22.2 points per game and finishing his career as the program’s fourth all-time leading point scorer at Glendale college, earned a spot on the All-Frontier League’s second team.

Monroe averaged a team-leading 16.8 points per game and placed third on the team in steals with 31. He tied for second in blocked shots with 13 and was third in assists with 65.

Monroe made 125 of 168 free-throw shots. The 125 free throws places Monroe eighth on the program’s single-season record list.

Lewis-Clark finished 14-15 and 6-10 in conference.

Baillie Kirker (Crescenta Valley High, 2009) freshman first baseman, University of Arizona softball: Kirker, the reigning All-Area Softball Player of the Year, hit her sixth home run of the season Sunday to spark host Arizona to a 13-5 nonconference victory against St. John’s. Kirker hit a two-run home run in the first to give the Wildcats (16-1) a 5-2 lead.

Through Sunday, Kirker is batting .277 (13 for 47) with six home runs and 17 runs batted in.

James Kostelnik (Loyola High, 2008,) sophomore, Duke University men’s track and field: Kostelnik, a Glendale resident, earned the first All-East honors of his career at the IC4A Championships in Boston on Saturday.

Kostelnik clocked a personal-best time of 8 minutes 14.67 seconds to place fifth in the 3,000-meter race. He completed the final 600 meters in 1:31.

Zareh Zargaryan (Hoover High, 2007) junior forward, Cal State Dominguez Hills men’s basketball: Zargaryan, a former All-Area first-team member, and Dominguez Hills concluded their season March 2. The fourth-seeded Toros suffered a 63-60 loss to fifth-seeded Chico State in an opening-round game of the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. Tournament at Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Zargaryan had with four points and one rebound in eight minutes. The Toros finished at 16-12 and 16-6 in the association.

In 24 games, Zargaryan averaged 2.6 points and two rebounds per game. He finished with 47 rebounds.
